QuoteSoft serves thousands of plumbing, piping and HVAC contractors with estimating software, but how well does it meet the demands of modern construction technology? This review examines QuoteSoft’s capabilities through a plumbing and mechanical contractor’s lens.

What is QuoteSoft?

QuoteSoft is an estimating software platform that has been serving the construction industry since 1986. Developed specifically for plumbing, piping and HVAC ductwork contractors, the platform helps specialty trade contractors estimate labor hours and material costs for commercial and industrial projects.

The company was acquired by ConstructConnect, which now develops and maintains the software. More than 3,000 contractors across the United States and Canada use QuoteSoft for estimating needs across commercial, industrial and process piping work.

QuoteSoft Estimating Features for Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors

QuoteSoft’s platform provides tools for material pricing, labor calculations and bid preparation.

Here’s a breakdown of its primary features:

#1: Takeoff & Estimating Capabilities

QuoteSoft provides on-screen digital takeoff directly on PDF, CAD and BIM plan files. Key features include:

  • On-screen input of pipe, fittings and assemblies
  • Automatic calculations of labor hours and material costs during takeoff
  • Real-time display of labor and material dollars as items are entered
  • QuoteSoft Piping BIM, a module that links to AutoCAD and Revit for design-build projects

#2: Database and Pricing Management

The material database is a central component of the QuoteSoft workflow:

  • Over 100,000 standard items are included in the built-in database
  • Preloaded labor tables include optional MCAA and PHCC labor units
  • National pricing integration is available via Harrison HPH CINX or Allpriser (each requires an additional subscription)
  • Custom configuration is required to match a company’s specific installation standards

#3: Separate Products for Piping and Ductwork

Unlike unified platforms, QuoteSoft structures its software around two distinct, separately licensed products:

  • QuoteSoft Pipe: For plumbing, mechanical piping, refrigeration and industrial process piping
  • QuoteSoft Duct: For commercial HVAC ductwork and accessories

Important Note: Contractors working in both trades must purchase, install and maintain both products separately. There is no shared environment or unified license connecting them.

#4: Integrations and Data Exchange

QuoteSoft offers connectivity with other construction software systems:

  • BIM Integration: AutoCAD and Revit integration via the Piping BIM module
  • Accounting Compatibility: Works with software like Dexter + Chaney and Microsoft Project
  • Data Export: Supports standard formats including XML, MDB, CSV and over 20 Excel templates

#5: Networking and Multi-User Access

QuoteSoft supports multi-user environments primarily through on-premises network installation:

  • Local Installation: The software is installed on individual computers and connects through a company network
  • Hardware Requirements: It tracks active users and jobs across the network but may require higher-spec hardware to prevent crashing on large files
  • Physical Key Access: Some versions require a physical key (dongle) to be present in the computer to run the software

QuoteSoft Reviews and Ratings

QuoteSoft is fairly easy to use. My biggest gripe is the customer service. You pay a yearly customer service charge for poor service. For the most part, I get the feeling you’re no longer important once you’ve signed up. They also have a customer number posted that is completely useless.

At first, the takeoff was fine… everything else has been a challenge. QuoteSoft’s customer support for quick questions and help with the program was good. But from there, updates have screwed me up, and they will not correct it. It is still not fixed, and this is how I quote jobs to make my living.

I am tired of working with QuoteSoft and even more with customer support. You need to wait for two days to receive a call from them. They put the number, but it never answers. The system doesn’t connect to the database, so it doesn’t work completely. I requested help. I sent emails to all trainers I know. No answers. No calls back, no help.

It takes some time to get set up with QuoteSoft. Key access only allows you to use the software with the physical key in hand. I wish it were a server version with a certain number of seats available so that when you are working from a different computer, you don’t have to take that key with you.

What QuoteSoft Offers Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors

QuoteSoft has been a fixture in plumbing and mechanical estimating for decades.

However, contractors should evaluate several considerations when assessing QuoteSoft:

  • Separate products required: Plumbing and HVAC estimating require two separate purchases — QuoteSoft Pipe and QuoteSoft Duct — each with its own license, database and installation. There is no shared data or unified platform between them
  • On-premises installation: QuoteSoft is primarily a desktop-based, on-premises solution, which can limit accessibility for estimating teams working remotely or across multiple locations
  • Upfront setup investment: The database must be customized to a company’s specific installation standards before it delivers full value, which requires significant time from senior estimators early on
  • Performance concerns: Multiple user reviews note that the software can be slow or prone to crashing on large files, requiring higher-spec hardware to run reliably
  • Support experience: A recurring theme in user feedback is frustration with customer service responsiveness and support quality after purchase — particularly around software updates and troubleshooting

Before committing, it’s worth making sure QuoteSoft’s dual-product structure and desktop setup actually fit how your team works.

McCormick: Plumbing & Mechanical Estimating Alternative

McCormick Systems provides estimating and takeoff software built exclusively for plumbing and mechanical contractors who need solutions designed for specialty trade work.

For a detailed side-by-side comparison, visit our McCormick vs. QuoteSoft comparison page.

All-in-One Plumbing & Mechanical Estimating

While QuoteSoft includes takeoff capabilities, it requires contractors to jump between two disconnected applications, each with its own separate database that does not communicate with the other.

McCormick eliminates this problem by bringing your entire workflow into a single platform:

  • Integrated Digital Takeoff: Design Estimating Pro (DEP) provides point-and-click digital takeoff directly inside the estimating environment, so you never have to sync data between separate trade modules
  • Automated Calculations: Labor hours, material quantities and pricing all calculate automatically in real-time as you perform takeoff
  • Design-Build Capability: Create working drawings and material lists directly from your estimates, allowing you to design and estimate simultaneously
  • Built-in Change Order Tracking: Easily track scope changes from the initial estimate through project completion, a critical project management capability that is not available in QuoteSoft

Trade-Specific Databases and Features

McCormick offers comprehensive databases designed specifically for plumbing and mechanical contractors:

  • Comprehensive plumbing database preloaded with material costs and labor units
  • Prebuilt mechanical database covering commercial and industrial projects
  • Support for boiler systems, fire suppression, fire sprinklers, closed-circuit systems and more
  • Options to add MCAA or PHCC labor units
  • Over 30,000 prebuilt trade-specific assemblies with integrated labor units and material pricing
  • Covers residential, commercial and industrial project types

Cloud-Based Technology

McCormick delivers accessibility and collaboration that QuoteSoft’s on-premises model cannot match:

  • Accessible Anywhere: McCormick Hosted lets your team estimate from any location with an internet connection — whether in the office, the field or a jobsite trailer
  • True Multi-User System: Multiple team members collaborate simultaneously on estimates without the need for a local network installation
  • Automatic Backups: Cloud-based data protection with high-level security
  • Real-Time Pricing Updates: Instant updates directly from major pricing services or individual supply houses

Advanced Features

McCormick provides additional capabilities for growing plumbing and mechanical businesses:

  • Customizable job screens for bid management
  • Advanced executive dashboards
  • User-defined reports for job breakouts
  • Bid summary sections to combine and split costs

Expert Support

McCormick backs its software with decades of hands-on construction industry knowledge, so you’re never navigating compliance or estimating challenges alone.

  • Over 40 years of construction industry experience
  • Dedicated support team with specialty trade knowledge
  • Average response time under 10 minutes
  • McCormick College training sessions for hands-on, personalized learning
  • User conferences for networking and education

How Contractors Can Choose the Best Estimating Solution

The right estimating solution should match your trade specialty, provide modern accessibility and work with the rest of your business.

Before choosing an estimating platform, ask yourself:

  • Is the software built specifically for plumbing and mechanical work?
  • Does it offer integrated digital takeoff, or will you need a separate product?
  • Is the platform cloud-based for remote access and collaboration?
  • Can multiple team members work simultaneously on estimates?
  • What is the total cost, including separate licenses, training, implementation and ongoing fees?
  • How quickly can new estimators become productive with the system?
  • Does it integrate with your accounting and project management software?
  • What level of ongoing support and training is provided — and how fast do they respond?

If you’d like to explore how modern, trade-specific estimating software could benefit your plumbing or mechanical contracting company, McCormick experts are ready to help you find the perfect fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Training Is Required to Get Started with QuoteSoft?

QuoteSoft includes one year of unlimited phone training and software setup with purchase, along with one year of technical support and basic maintenance updates.

However, because the database must be customized to match a company’s specific installation standards before delivering full value, contractors should expect meaningful upfront time investment from senior estimators.

McCormick Systems offers personalized, one-on-one onboarding tailored to your company’s specific workflows and project types. McCormick College training sessions are recorded so your team can reference them anytime, allowing new estimators to get up to speed faster.

Many McCormick users report that new estimators can begin producing accurate estimates within days rather than weeks.

Is QuoteSoft Cloud-Based?

QuoteSoft is primarily a desktop-based, on-premises solution installed on individual computers and accessed through a company network. While ConstructConnect has introduced some cloud-enabled capabilities, the core platform is not a fully cloud-based system in the way modern estimating platforms are designed.

McCormick Hosted is a true cloud-based platform, allowing estimators to work from any location with an internet connection — the office, the field or a jobsite trailer. This eliminates the need for on-premises hardware and gives the entire team access to the same system from anywhere.

Which Is Better for Plumbing and Mechanical Estimating — QuoteSoft or McCormick?

The choice between QuoteSoft and McCormick typically comes down to your current business model, your budget and how your team handles different trades.

QuoteSoft has two separate desktop products: QuoteSoft Pipe and QuoteSoft Duct. Each requires its own license and setup. The platform is well-suited for contractors comfortable with on-premises installation who primarily need fast, customizable estimating for a single trade type.

McCormick is an all-in-one cloud-based platform that unifies plumbing and mechanical estimating, digital takeoff, change order tracking and project collaboration under a single license. It allows contractors to work from anywhere, with automatic calculations as they perform takeoff, and includes expert support averaging under 10 minutes.

Ultimately, the best fit depends on whether your workflow is better served by a traditional desktop-based tool for a specific trade or a unified, cloud-based platform built to handle the full scope of plumbing and mechanical work.

How Important Is Customer Support When Choosing Estimating Software?

Customer support quality can significantly impact your team’s productivity and ability to meet critical bid deadlines.

QuoteSoft users frequently report concerns about post-sale support quality, with multiple reviewers citing difficulty reaching support staff and unresolved issues with software updates — particularly after renewing annual service subscriptions.

McCormick Systems provides dedicated support with an average response time of under 10 minutes. The support team brings over 40 years of construction industry experience and specialty trade knowledge, meaning they understand the unique challenges plumbing and mechanical contractors face.

Beyond response speed, consider these support factors:

  • Availability during critical bidding periods
  • Technical expertise specific to your trade
  • Training resources like recorded sessions and documentation
  • User community and networking opportunities through conferences
  • Implementation assistance to ensure a smooth onboarding

Fast, knowledgeable support is not just a convenience — it’s a competitive advantage that keeps your estimating team productive when deadlines matter most.
